Qu’on se le dise, le western n’est pas encore mort et il reste encore des cinéastes capables d’aborder ce style avec fraîcheur et entrain. Après les magnifiques There will be blood ou encore The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford, Appaloosa explore une autre dimension du grand ouest américain.

Cole & Hitch, deux amis, atterrissent à Appaloosa, petite ville qui vit quotidiennement avec la peur de Bragg, homme qui la contrôle avec violence. Alors qu’ils mettent de l’ordre, une jeune veuve arrive en ville et va perturber le duo, et plus largement encore.

Sans réinventer un genre épuisé jusqu’à la corde par les années, Appaloosa peut s’enorgueillir de rafraîchir le genre en ajoutant non seulement de l’humour bien disséminé tout au long du film, mais aussi de l’émotion et un triangle amoureux peu commun.

Grâce aux compositions impeccables et enjouées de Viggo Mortensen et Ed Harris, interprétant le Hitch & Cole, deux comédiens charismatiques auxquels répond un salaud magnifique en la personne de Jeremy Irons. Renee Zellweger semble plus empruntée et moins à sa place malgré son énergie.

Superbement cadré et mis en lumière, Appaloosa réussit là où d’autres ont échoué, en évitant une image trop granuleuse et sale.

En bref, un film plus qu’agréable, qui met en valeurs les deux comédiens principaux, que l’on sous-estime malheureusement bien trop.

Western is not dead, that’s for sure. After the beautiful hits of There will be blood or The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford, Appaloosa has a fresh look on the genre. Cole and Hitch, two friends, arrive in Appaloosa, a small city of the west that lives with the fear of Bragg, a rancher that controls the city with violence. While they’re at establishing a new order and finding the murderers of the previous Marshall and his associate, a widow arrives in town and will disturb the duet and more.

While the movie is not setting up new standards for westerns, Appaloosa can proud itself of giving a fresh look to the genre, adding humour but also the complexity of a love triangle, which is not usual.

Thanks to the superb acting of Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris, playing Hitch & Cole, but also of Jeremy Irons, marvellous bastard among all. Renee Zellweger puts a lot of energy in her part but with less success on the screen.

The image and the light are both brilliant, which is not so common in westerns.

Appaloosa is a good movie, with two underestimated actors but is worth being seen !
